The Plus-Size Guide to Choosing Jeans
Waist gaps, hip fit, fabric stretch and hem length. Cuts and fitting-room tips for finding plus-size jeans that truly fit you.

Finding the perfect jeans is a long journey for most women. In plus sizes the journey asks for a little more patience: a gap at the waist, fabric pulling at the hips, or legs that loosen during the day are familiar problems. The good news is that a few basics can shorten your time in the fitting room and lead you to the pair you’ll wear for years.
Get to know the cuts
- Straight leg: Falls straight from hip to ankle. Timeless and works with every shoe.
- Wide leg: Widens from the hip. Paired with a high waist it lengthens the legs and is wonderfully comfortable.
- Bootcut: Opens slightly below the knee and creates a balanced line with boots and heels.
- Mom and barrel cuts: Fitted at the waist, relaxed through hip and leg. Ideal for an easy weekend look.
- Skinny: Creates a lovely contrast with long tunics, oversized shirts and long coats.
There is no single “right” cut. The one you feel comfortable and strong in is your cut.
Waist and hip fit
The most common plus-size problem is jeans that fit the hips but gap at the waist. Look for patterns sold as “curvy” or “contour”, which account for the difference between waist and hip. High-rise styles sit above the navel and stay in place as you sit and stand. From behind, a waistband that doesn’t gape and back pockets centred on the hips are good signs.
Read the fabric
The composition label tells you a lot.
- 100% cotton: Sturdy and classic, but can feel stiff at first. It moulds to your body over time.
- 1–2% elastane: The ideal balance of comfort and shape retention.
- 3% elastane or more: Very comfortable but may loosen during the day. Trying these a size down can help.
Dark, even washes look smarter and more formal; light, faded washes feel relaxed.
The fitting-room test
Looking in the mirror isn’t enough. Try this:
- Squat. If they slide down or dig in, it’s not the right pattern.
- Sit. The waistband shouldn’t press into your stomach.
- Walk. The fabric shouldn’t bunch at the inner leg.
- Look from behind. The waist gap shouldn’t be wider than two fingers.
Hem length
Hem length changes the character of a pair. Wide legs that break softly over the shoe lengthen the leg. On straight cuts, a hem just above the ankle looks modern. If they’re too long, have them shortened; you can ask for an “original hem” to keep the factory finish.
Care
Wash jeans inside out in cold water and hang them to dry instead of tumble drying. The colour stays vivid for longer and the elastane fibres tire more slowly. A well-chosen, well-kept pair will become the most worn piece in your wardrobe.
