A Body Care Ritual: Fifteen Minutes for Yourself
Body care isn't a chore but a way to thank your body. A weekly self-care ritual with exfoliation, moisturising, massage and fragrance layering.

We often give our bodies far less care than our faces. Yet body care matters not just for smooth skin but for the relationship we have with our bodies. Taking fifteen minutes to touch your skin, get to know it and thank it can become a small ceremony that washes away the day. Here is a simple ritual you can do once or twice a week.
Preparation: set the scene
Half of a ritual is atmosphere. Keep the bathroom warm, put on music you love and leave your phone in another room. Have a soft towel and a cosy robe ready. These fifteen minutes belong only to you.
1. Exfoliate (3 minutes)
Exfoliating once or twice a week removes dead cells and helps moisturiser work better.
- Physical exfoliation: Massage sugar or fine salt scrubs onto damp skin in gentle circles. Spend a little longer on rough areas such as elbows, knees and heels.
- Chemical exfoliation: Body lotions with lactic or glycolic acid renew skin without scrubbing. They can be a gentler choice for sensitive skin.
Don’t exfoliate straight after shaving or on irritated skin.
2. A lukewarm shower (4 minutes)
Hot water feels relaxing but dries the skin. Choose lukewarm water and a soap-free, hydrating shower gel. Cooling the water slightly at the very end boosts circulation and leaves you refreshed.
3. Moisturise (4 minutes)
The first few minutes after a shower are the golden time for moisturising. Pat skin lightly with a towel and apply body oil or lotion while it is still damp.
- Body oils: Almond, jojoba and apricot kernel oils give skin a silky sheen.
- Body butters: Rich creams with shea and cocoa butter are ideal for very dry areas.
- Light lotions: Choose fast-absorbing formulas for summer and daytime.
4. Massage (3 minutes)
As you apply moisturiser, give yourself a small massage. Start at the feet and use long, calm strokes upwards, towards the heart. Release tension in your shoulders and neck with small circles of your fingertips. During these minutes, try to look at your body with kindness rather than criticism.
5. A fragrance layer (1 minute)
Using a perfume that matches or complements your body lotion helps scent last all day. Spray it onto moisturised skin at the pulse points: wrists, neck and inner elbows.
Thank your body
The purpose of this ritual isn’t to “fix a flaw” but to reconnect with the body that carries you every day. Stretch marks, scars and curves are part of your story. As you smooth moisturiser over them, you may notice you are thanking them for the first time.
